Special Areas place type

The Strategic framework outlines the 20-year vision for growth and development in the Moreton Bay Region. It divides the region into 13 place types. These place types explain the level of growth and form of development that is expected in different neighbourhoods and communities throughout the Moreton Bay Region. Special areas is one of these 13 place types.

The Special Areas place type provides a specific role or function to the Moreton Bay Region. The activities and uses in these areas may be quite intensive, or may occupy large areas. They may include large entertainment precincts, recreation and sporting areas, infrastructure, aviation and marine facilities.

Where can I find a Special Areas place type?

Special Areas include Woodfordia, Lakeside Park, Old Petrie Town, Abbey Museum, Caboolture and Redcliffe airports, Scarborough Boat Harbour, Caboolture Historical Village, Queensland State Equestrian Centre, Woodford prison, wastewater treatment plants and regional scale sports facilities and landfill sites.

Why are Special Areas important?

The Special Areas place type includes activities and uses that are not easily integrated into other place types. They provide places for tourism, sport and recreation, entertainment and essential services for residents and visitors to the region. These areas contribute to the culture, heritage, economy and health and wellbeing of our community.

Special Areas have unique geographic requirements allowing them to cater for special land uses or temporary events.

How will Special Areas develop in the future?

Special Areas will continue to provide their unique functions in the future. Some areas may increase in scale or intensity of use as future need increases for the special functions they provide. Special Areas will be protected from encroachment of incompatible development in the future.
