Remember when music posters were actual art?
Psychedelic rockers, disco dancers and new wave nostalgists are set to experience a blast from the past as City of Moreton Bay turns it up for a unique poster exhibition.
Held at Redcliffe Museum from 7 November to 21 February, Enjoy this Trip: The Art of Music Posters exhibition will feature Australian and international music posters spanning the 1960s to 1980s, drawn from the National Gallery’s expansive collection.
Posters of well-known Australian acts including Mental As Anything, Stephen Cummings and Goanna will be joined by international icons like The Doors, Cream, The Who, Grateful Dead and Paul McCartney’s Wings – giving visitors a nostalgic exploration of the times through art, graphic design, music, colour and typography.
City of Moreton Bay Peter Flannery said music fans were in for a treat with the posters sure to spark a trip down memory lane with the posters tracking how music culture evolved.
“Music-lovers will be able to immerse themselves in the history and cultural impact of music and its associated art, thanks to more than 70 printed posters accompanied by a period-specific soundtrack,” he said.
“We’re a City that has produced some world-famous acts over the years like the Bee Gees and Kingfisha. This exhibition will ignite memories of a truly golden era of music, thanks to featured bands who have influenced pop culture, music and art long after their heyday.
The exhibition will feature landmark works from the “Summer of Love” and San Francisco’s counterculture scene, as well as examples of Australian counterculture and music promotion styles alongside international connections.
Visitors can explore a fascinating era of experimental pre-digital printing, featuring melting fonts, psychedelic colour palettes and kaleidoscopic art poster compositions.
The exhibition will kick off with a free official opening event on Saturday 7 November at 10.30am featuring a presentation by National Gallery Curator Leanne Santoro, who will reveal the fascinating history and cultural impact behind the posters’ eye-catching designs. Singer and DJ Megan Barnes will provide a live performance on the day.
Other exhibition events include music trivia and vinyl art creation. For more information click here.
