This World Kangaroo Day (24 October), City of Moreton Bay is prioritising road safety, monitoring the iconic wildlife figure as they jump across busy roads.

A motion-activated mobile camera is being set up around roads where kangaroos are commonly struck by vehicles.

To keep animals unharmed, the video footage is being analysed to see what fauna protection methods can be put in place to improve road safety and avoid wildlife-vehicle collisions.

The footage is also used to observe how kangaroos react and move around vehicles.

Council's Green Infrastructure Program already has several fauna movement infrastructure initiatives in place, including 150 LED vehicle-activated signs, 48 fauna underpasses, and more than 40 locations with fauna exclusion fencing.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the protection of our thriving fauna population was every Moreton Bay resident’s responsibility.

“It’s important our wildlife can move around safely across roads and community areas,” he said.

“Kangaroos are most active during dawn and dusk and will move frequently in search of food, and that can mean crossing busy roads.

“Drivers should take care, especially around those times, and report any injured wildlife as soon as possible. We have signage alerting drivers to wildlife vehicle collision hotspots.

“We’re going green as we grow, and that means protecting every inhabitant of Moreton Bay as our population continues to grow.

Kangaroo road safety tips:

  • Keep an eye out for wildlife warning signage.
  • Reduce your speed where safe to do so and look out for wildlife on or near the roadside.
  • Be conscious of the seasons and time of day. Kangaroos may be more active during dawn and dusk.
  • Make sure your headlights work to see any potential wildlife crossing the road.
