Moreton Bay’s most ‘purr-fect’ cat names have been revealed, with Luna clawing to the number one spot.

Council registration data released for International Cat Day (8 August) shows Luna is the top name choice for cats, edging out Bella and Charlie by little more than a whisker.

Rounding out the top 10 most popular cat names are Milo, Coco, Simba, Cleo, Missy, Molly and Mia.

The registration data has also uncovered City of Moreton Bay’s favourite feline breed by far is the Domestic Short Hair cat. It also shows Caboolture and Morayfield could be dubbed ‘Cat-boolture’ and ‘Meow-ayfield’ as they are the two suburbs with the highest number of cat registrations.

There are currently 12,308 cats registered in City of Moreton Bay, a figure which is growing as the population increases and residents become more aware of the need to register their feline family members.

Mayor Peter Flannery said some residents didn’t realise they were required to register their cats with Council.

“Councils across Queensland have different rules for keeping cats, so there can be some confusion,” he said./p>

“City of Moreton Bay has the same registration rules for dogs and cats, both wonderful pets which bring a lot of joy to their ‘paw-rents’.

“Registration helps Council reunite you with your cat or dog if they ever become lost and supports our responsible pet ownership programs.

“Last financial year alone, we reunited 327 lost cats with their owners which goes to show the importance of cat registration.”

All dogs and cats must be registered by 12 weeks of age or within 14 days of being brought into City of Moreton Bay, per the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and Animal Management Local Law 2023.

It’s also mandatory for all cats and dogs to be microchipped and to wear an identification tag with their owners’ contact details while out of the home.

Council will soon issue renewals for cat and dog registrations, which are due by 30 September.
