Celebrating our City's unique flora and fauna this Biodiversity Month

- City of Moreton Bay is home to a unique and diverse range of ecosystems, flora and fauna including terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems, sea turtles, dugongs, mangroves, rare coastal health, koala habitats and migratory shorebirds
- Council remains committed to protecting and enhancing the City’s biodiversity, investing $22 million in natural environment conservation this financial year
- This Biodiversity Month, residents are encouraged to get involved in local Bushcare groups or participate in other environmental projects, and landholders can explore conservation partnerships with Council or develop a biodiversity friendly verge garden or backyard
City of Moreton Bay is celebrating its unique position as one of the most biodiverse regions in the world this Biodiversity Month (September), highlighting environmental initiatives and encouraging residents get involved in programs aimed at enhancing the exceptional ecosystems around them.
The City’s unique landscapes and biodiversity provide essential benefits which underpin our way of life. This includes improving soil health for our agricultural sector, maintaining water quality, helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change, floods and other natural hazards, supporting the mental wellbeing of our community through connection to nature and attracting visitors to contribute to our City’s economy.
Mayor Peter Flannery said Biodiversity Month is an opportunity to pause and appreciate our incredible natural environment, while taking time to connect with nature and learn more about the species that call City of Moreton Bay home.
“Council is committed to preserving and enhancing our City's unique biodiversity through a range of initiatives that support healthy flora and fauna habitats,” he said.
“This includes our Land Buyback for Environmental Purposes Program, which has acquired more than 100 hectares of strategic land to manage and restore City of Moreton Bay’s biodiversity and natural ecosystems.
“We’ve developed guidelines and demonstration sites to help support residents to create biodiversity-friendly verge gardens. We’ve installed signage and wildlife stencils on roads in habitat areas and ecological corridors to promote native animal awareness, as well as rope bridges, underpasses, refuge poles and animal exclusion fencing at key crossing points to minimise vehicle collisions.
“Council is also investing $22 million in natural environment conservation during the 2026-27 financial year, ensuring we continue to preserve our natural spaces for generations to come.”
For residents looking for a practical way to enhance biodiversity, Bushcare volunteer groups play an important role in conservation through bush restoration projects. Across City of Moreton Bay, there are more than 40 active groups made up of over 250 volunteers.
Additionally, Council has partnered with 622 private landholders to protect and restore more than 7,700 hectares of bushland as part of the Voluntary Conservation and Land for Wildlife programs.

"These voluntary conservation programs provide opportunities for landholders to care for native flora and fauna on their properties, with ongoing support and guidance,” Mayor Flannery said.
“Council is also developing its new planning scheme, where we will consider ways to better support the biodiversity and ecological functions of the natural environment, while supporting growth.”
Throughout September, City of Moreton Bay’s environment centres will also host a range of family-friendly activities, wildlife experiences and educational sessions, providing residents with a fun and engaging way to learn about the local environment.
