Moreton Bay Waste Warrior competition

The Moreton Bay Waste Warrior competition encourages schools and early learning centres to create and deliver a waste reduction campaign for the chance to win a cash prize. The competition is hosted by the City of Moreton Bay.

Fighting food waste

Did you know Australia throws away around 7.6 million tonnes of food each year? Australian households contribute 30% to this waste.

The 2026 theme is Fighting Food Waste. It invites students to explore the environmental impacts of wasted food and encourages schools and early learning centres across the city to launch a campaign. The campaign will emphasise reducing avoidable waste, such as uneaten sandwiches, or recycles unavoidable scraps, like fruit peels, through composting or worm farming.

Program outline

• Recruit your student or staff-led team
• Design a campaign that either:
  • inspires the wider community to reduce household food waste, or;
  • actively reduces food waste within your school or early learning centre through practical, on-the-ground changes.
  • Deliver your campaign and capture its key highlights and outcomes in a two-minute showcase video

Registration

• For your chance to win, register for the waste warrior competition.
• Once you have registered and created your campaign, submit your video.

Ensure those appearing in the video submission fill out the photo and video consent form(PDF, 358KB).

Deadlines and dates

• Registration closes Friday, 31 July 2026
• Submission deadline is Friday, 18 September 2026
• Winners will be announced on Monday, 2 November 2026

• First place: $2,500
• Highly commended: $500
