The Sewing Studio

Explore your creativity at The Sewing Studio at Redcliffe Library.

The studio includes:

• three Brother NV180 sewing machines
• a Juki overlocker
• a Juki industrial sewing machine. 

Before you can book a sewing machine

To use the studio, you need to be at least 16 years old and a library member. Before you can book, you must watch the introduction video for your selected machine. Beginner sewers should also complete a Beginner Basics safety induction for the machine you wish to use. Experienced sewers can drop in during opening hours for a 15-minute safety induction.

All sewers must also agree to the following usage statement andterms of use(PDF, 145KB):

I hereby acknowledge that as a Moreton Bay Region Library member using The Sewing Studio equipment, I have read and understand the terms of use and agree to comply at all times with the above terms and all stated requirements written or communicated to me at any time from Moreton Bay Region library staff.

You need to know basic sewing techniques, bring your own coloured thread and material and be able to work without supervision. Staff are available for questions and troubleshooting.

Beginner Basics safety induction classes

These classes cover everything included in our normal 15-minute induction, just at a slower pace. Perfect for people who are a bit less confident using a sewing machine. Sessions are run in small groups.

Before using a sewing machine for the first time, all sewers should watch the video about Brother NV180.

Beginner Basics safety inductions are available on the first Wednesday of the month or the second Saturday of the month.

If you're experienced using sewing machines, drop in for a 15-minute induction anytime during opening hours.

Once completed, you can then book a sewing machine.

Overlocker

First time overlocker users will need to watch the introduction video for the overlocker and attend a safety induction.

If you're experienced using overlockers, drop in for a 15-minute induction anytime during opening hours

Beginner overlocker users should book a Beginner Basics session on the first Wednesday of the month or the fourth Saturday of the month.

Once you’ve done that, you can book to use the overlocker.

Industrial sewing machine

The industrial sewing machine is great for sewing heavier materials like leather, canvas, upholstery fabric and sail cloth. We have a Juki Lu 2810 machine that uses knee controls to operate. It comes with black or white thread.  

To use the machine, drop into Redcliffe Library during opening hours for a short safety induction or book into a Beginner Basics induction on the third Thursday of the month.

Once completed, you can book the industrial sewing machine.
