Redcliffe Peninsula Rail Line turns 10

Redcliffe Museum is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Redcliffe Peninsula railway line, an achievement over 131 years in the making.

Historian Dr Ruth Kerr will discuss the railway’s long journey from its first proposal in 1885 to its opening in 2016.

Maxwell Barton OAM was the chairman of “RAIL 09 -it’s time for the line” campaign and played a major role in bringing the railway to Redcliffe.

Learn how more than 22 proposals, shifting politics, and decades of community advocacy finally led to the creation of the 12.6-kilometre, $1.2 billion rail link. It connected Kippa Ring, Rothwell, Mango Hill East, Mango Hill, Murrumba Downs, and Kallangur to Brisbane.

About the speakers

Dr Ruth Kerr is a leading Queensland historian with more than 45 years of experience, noted for her expertise in mining, railways, pastoral and administrative history, and her extensive knowledge of Queensland’s archives. Ruth is an adjunct professor at the University of Queensland and recipient of the 2013 John Douglas Kerr Medal of Distinction.

Maxwell Barton has had a lifelong career in civil engineering, developing civil infrastructure for local government and private interests. He gained a Masters degree from the University of Queensland in 1978. He was sponsored by the Institute of Municipal Engineers Australia as a visiting international fellow in 1993 and received a further fellowship in 1997 from the Queensland Foundation for Local Government Engineering. A recipient of the 2001 Commonwealth Centenary Medal, he was awarded an OAM in 2016.
