Workshop: Sports fans! with Shan Michaels

Next date: Saturday, 25 July 2026 | 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM

Two yellow and pink fans

Join textile artist Shan Michaels for this playful workshop where participants will transform a simple hand fan into a colourful object of personal expression.

Using paint pens, glitter glue, lace, paper and other decorative materials, we’ll riff on the language and aesthetics of sport — team colours, slogans, and fan culture — and reimagine them through craft, humour, and a touch of queer playfulness.

Inspired by The Huxleys | Bad sports, the workshop reflects on what it means to feel outside traditional sporting culture. Participants might invent their own teams, write a new slogan, or celebrate an achievement that matters to them. Here, “winning” shifts from competition toward creativity, identity, and joyful belonging.

About the artist

Shan Michaels is a queer textile artist whose practice is informed by lived experiences navigating and resisting the status quo. Through sewing, quilting, and embroidery, Shan explores identity, inclusion, accessibility, and sustainability. Textiles, with their rich history and association with domesticity, provide a powerful medium to unravel and reconstruct old narratives—each stitch a reclamation.

In 2022, Shan was awarded second place in the Moreton Bay Art Prize, and her work has since been exhibited nationally. Across gallery exhibitions and public programs, Shan invites others into the process—fostering conversation, slowing down, and finding shared meaning through making. Her practice is a vibrant, ongoing dialogue between material, memory, and collective futures.
