DIY solar dye with Norton Fredericks

Next date: Saturday, 02 August 2025 | 01:30 PM to 03:30 PM

Leaves and flowers on a white background

Join artist and facilitator Norton Fredericks in this intriguing creative workshop designed to connect you with your local surroundings and capture nature on cloth.

Norton will teach you to create natural fibre twine and botanically dye a silk bandana scarf using ochre as a mordant.

You will extract dyes from local plants using the solar dye jar method.

You can take home your solar dye jar to keep in a warm sunny spot for a couple of weeks to process.

All materials will be included. Please note that ochre can be quite messy so it will be best for participants to wear clothes they don’t mind getting a bit dirty or bring an apron. Ochre is a natural earth pigment that will not easily wash out of clothing so please keep this in mind.

Cost $25 - bookings essential.

Redcliffe Art Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

About the artist

Norton Fredericks was born in 1990 in Tulmur, Ipswich, and is an early career interdisciplinary visual artist and workshop facilitator.

Norton has mixed European and Aboriginal Australian (Murri) heritage and currently lives on Kombumerri Country, Gold Coast.

Their practice-based research often sits at the intersection between art and science, examining the external forces that impact on both the human experience and the environment around us.

Their work explores themes of ecological threats, queer ecologies, and their intersectional identity. They create using predominantly historical techniques across fibre, textiles, metals, pottery and photography mediums while drawing from their knowledge of chemistry, environmental sustainability and ancient crafts.

Norton imbues their work with geographical memories and examines how environmental variables respond with materials.
