Op art: Creative space

Art supplies and geometric drawings

This creative space will spark your curiosity by drawing inspiration from Lincoln Austin's work in the current exhibition, Imperfect Pattern.

Investigate op art, optical illusions, and geometry through hands-on making.

Op art (short for optical art) is an art movement that emerged in the 1960s. It is best known for using geometric patterns that seem to move or shift when you view them. Optical illusions trick our minds into thinking that still images are moving.

Artists, like Lincoln Austin, use pattern, colour, angles, or light to push the boundaries of our perception.

You are invited to

  • Put your skills to the test by making an optical illusion cube.
  • Spin out with spirographs - geometric drawing devices that create captivating repeating patterns.
  • Make a perfect (or imperfect) pattern using the geometric magnet wall.
  • String up some shapes on our interactive string wall.

Explore how artists engage ideas, methods, and ways of making at the gallery.

Free. Drop in any time during gallery opening hours to enjoy fun and engaging activities. All ages.
