With all the ‘bad weather’ reported this year, rainy seeks to remind us of the simple pleasures and joy of the sound of rain.
Hard rain on the roof, rhythms of random sound somehow syncopating in a way we humans can enjoy.
Artist Ross Manning has composed a sound installation of water droplets. It focusses on this natural wayward percussion where water meets gravity, inspired by the (changing) weather cycles around us.
About the artist
Ross Manning is a Brisbane-based artist known to explore our on-going relationship with technology.
Manning's art practice explores the electronic image, the digitisation of the natural world and the ephemeral nature of data and machines.
His work is often comprised of interactions between light, sound and physics. He creates networks of objects which operate according to their own logic.
Manning repurposes disused and broken technologies by altering existing components to create dynamic sculptures and atmospheric installations This brings them into conversation with the utilitarian object.
He sets out to demystify their rarified position by making interventions on electronics and machines, for example flatscreen televisions and projectors.
Through this process of demystification, he accesses the possibilities for sensory experience. He makes the machine work in a unique way, outside of the set parameters of common operation. In this way he hopes to explore the human experience in an increasingly digital reality.
His work addresses science and technology, while also referencing the legacy of minimalism, sound art and expanded cinema.
