Lawrence Daws: Held Close

Lawrence Daws’ career spans more than six decades. His works are held across national and international collections, both public and private. There are some works however that Daws has retained - those that he has chosen to hold closer.

Daws was born in 1927, grew up on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia and studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne. Most recognised for his landscape paintings, Daws has long been applauded for his use of metaphysical symbols and the superb craftsmanship of his work.

This exhibition will highlight works selected primarily from the artist’s own collection, giving insight into what Daws would believe are his most significant, yet most rarely seen achievements. Discover what has nourished and sustained Daws’ long career. Explore his diverse and lifelong influences - from his studies in engineering, architecture and art, to his close connection with work of 15th century Italian painter Piero della Francesca, and through to his love of Jungian psychology.
