Saturday 13 June | Playing with charcoal wet and dry with Tricia Reust
Discover how to use charcoal techniques from master pastellist and visual artist Tricia Reust.
In this workshop you will work on different papers and learn about drawing principles such as mark making, achieving tone and how to use charcoal in wet and dry formats.
About the artist
Tricia Reust is a visual artist working in most media. As member of several art societies and past president of the Pastel Society of Australia (PSA), she is a master pastellist with the PSA and a life member of the Redcliffe Art Society. A regular exhibitor with these and other groups, Tricia has also held more than 20 solo exhibitions. Her awards include the National Mortimore Prize in 2012, and second prize and honourable mention in the 10th International Drawing Biennale.
Tricia has recorded three episodes on the Colour in Your Life television program and her work is included in a time capsule on the moon (Lunar Codex 2024). She has published two books and recorded several instructional videos. She is a popular art tutor and travels throughout Australia and beyond with this teaching. Her workshops have been delivered to various art groups/centres around Australia, New Zealand and Norfolk Island.
Saturday 18 July | Weaving with Yvonne Williams
Join in and embrace a relaxed atmosphere to learn weaving through simple techniques. Artist Yvonne Williams will talk about the process of dyeing raffia and guide you through how to start a weave, and work with coiling and netting techniques to start you on your weaving journey.
About the artist
Yvonne Williams is a Ningi-based artist, inspired to create art that promotes healing and sharing between people in community. For the last 10 years she has been weaving with elders in the community, and since 2020 began dyeing raffia for the weaving circles. Yvonne’s art practice includes dyeing raffia, sourcing eco dye materials, weaving and creation of baskets, spirit wheels and jewellery.
She is connected to Yinnar Yarning, a non-for-profit Aboriginal Corporation who support local kindergartens and schools in Deception Bay with cultural education and facilitated and shared cultural knowledge about weaving through many workshops across the city. You can join Yvonne at the Deception Bay Library’s Women's Weaving and Yarning circle, and become part of the weaving community yourself.
Saturday 15 August | Chinese ink painting with Silka Huang
In Chinese culture, bamboo is a timeless symbol of perseverance, integrity, and inner strength. It bends with the wind yet remains unbroken, embodying resilience, grace, and a deep sense of truth.
Guided by artist Silka Huang, this workshop invites you to explore the beauty and spirit of traditional Chinese bamboo painting through ink and brush. In a relaxed and supportive environment, you will be guided through essential techniques to capture the elegance, rhythm, and expressive simplicity of bamboo. Participants will develop their own bamboo landscape composition, gaining insight into how brushwork, ink tones, and composition come together to create depth and atmosphere.
In this workshop, you will learn:
- An introduction to the cultural meaning and history of bamboo in Chinese painting.
- Fundamental brush and ink techniques for painting bamboo branches, nodes, and leaves.
- Methods for creating depth and distance.
- Principles of traditional Chinese painting composition.
- A brief exploration of Chinese seals (stamps).
About the artist
Silka is a Gold Coast-based artist, graphic designer, and art teacher, specialising in Chinese painting and multimedia illustration. Born and raised in Guangzhou, China, Silka followed her passion and began studying art in 2009. In 2017, she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts and began her journey as an artist and art teacher. She has partnered with the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages (RBDM) to design the Chinese zodiac commemorative birth certificate range, as well as a Chinese commemorative marriage certificate launched in 2022.
Saturday 12 September | Zodiac mini vases with Wendy Ma
In this hand building workshop using clay, participants will be creating mini vases and adding elements of decoration inspired by the Chinese zodiac. The vases will be finished and fired in a traditional green celadon glaze.
The workshop will have a focus on exploring the inspiration behind Wendy's own work and how it connects with traditional motifs in Chinese artistry, building a living visual language shaped by heritage and lived experiences.
Please note works will take 6-8 weeks to be fired – participants will be notified when the items are ready for collection.
About the artist
Wendy Ma is a ceramic artist based in Brisbane, creating functional and sculptural vessels that sit between everyday ritual and collectable design.
With a background in design and fashion, her practice combines wheel throwing, hand-building, surface decoration and varied firing techniques, drawing from traditional Chinese visual languages reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.
Saturday 17 October | Exploring collage with Amanda Gardner
Join artist Amanda Gardner in a relaxed, hands-on workshop that plays with images, observation, and cut-and-paste. Using the landscape as a starting point, create collages that respond to what you see and how to interpret it.
Through a range of landscape images, participants will explore elements of design, discovering unexpected details and visual connections. Working with paper, participants will build layered compositions, experimenting with cutting, tearing, arranging, and reworking. The focus is on exploration, experimentation, discovery, and seeing how simple choices can change an the visual composition.
About the artist
Amanda Gardner’s collage evolves through experimentation, observation, and a direct response to the ideas and relationships suggested by her source materials.
She creates collages using original photographs and found papers. Her work is process-driven, dependent on the resources she discovers, the simple act of cutting and pasting, and the unhurried contemplation of the visual elements within a composition. Central to her practice is the mindful use of essential materials that are, where possible, non-toxic and biodegradable.
