Consultation on the proposed naming of this park has now closed

Honouring a local volunteer

Council received a request to name the park in recognition of Phil Hungerford and his contributions to the community.

Council provided provisional support for the name 'Phil Hungerford Place' pending community consultation and is now considering submissions.

As a cofounder of the Bribie Island Triathlon series, Mr Hungerford served as Race Director for 40+ years, an event that has benefited the community and encouraged a healthy lifestyle for all. Phil has a long history with both running and triathlon having been involved in races around the world as an athlete prior to becoming Race Director.

Mr Hungerford has supported and helped to foster the sporting aspirations of children and adults whether they are recreational or professional athletes Phil encourages everyone to get involved!

Between 22 March to 19 April 2024, Council invited community comment on the proposed name. Consultation has now closed.

Naming Council's assets

Council recognises the significant social value to the community of naming places, structures and assets under its direct control.

We see naming as important because it helps to create amazing places by:

  • identifying landmarks within the community
  • supporting wayfinding for locals, visitors and emergency services agencies
  • contributing to community belonging and place identity
  • reflecting and preserving the cultural and heritage values of the region.

Council undertakes naming in accordance with our Policy For Council-owned or administered public places, structures and other assets (excluding roads).
