Hazardous and Regulated waste

Regulated waste is commercial or industrial waste of a waste type listed in Schedule 7 of the Environmental Protection regulation 2008.
Regulated wastes are hazardous wastes that have been deemed to be extremely harmful to the community and the environment and therefore require a higher level of regulation.

Council's waste facilities can only accept limited amounts of 'Limited Regulated Waste', which is a sub category of the Regulated Waste classification.
Limited regulated waste means any of the following regulated waste:
- Animal effluent and residues, including abattoir effluent and poultry and fish processing waste
- Food processing waste
- Quarantine waste that has been rendered non-infectious
- Sewage sludge or residue
- Treated clinical waste

Disposing of Limited regulated waste:
- Commercial operators are requested to contact Council prior to disposing of large quantities to ensure the waste can be accepted. See waste facilities to see which facilities accept limited regulated waste

Asbestos containing material (A.C.M)
Materials containing asbestos were very common in the Australian residential building industry between the 1940s and late 1980s before their production stopped.
The use of all forms of asbestos has been banned nationally since 31 December 2003. The ban does not apply to asbestos installed prior to this date (eg. asbestos materials in houses).
Asbestos Containing Material is classified as a Regulated Waste under Queensland Government legislation and has specific requirements for the removal, transport and disposal of this waste.
Asbestos Containing Material although it is a construction and demolition waste type, it needs to be managed as a Regulated Waste due to its hazardous nature.
IMPORTANT: Illegal dumping of asbestos containing material and other regulated waste is an offence and incurs a high penalty.
Disposing of Asbestos

Medical waste (sharps or needles, dialysis bags)
Residents are dealing with illness, unfortunately some with chronic illness that produces specialised waste requiring special disposal systems.
Whether disposing of medical waste for yourself or as a carer for a loved one, please check with your medical professionals, hospital and local chemist for where to dispose of this medical waste. Medical waste should be properly disposed into a Bio Hazard waste treatment system.
NOTE: Medical waste is NOT recyclable through the household recycling bin service or general waste bin services.

Needles are classified as medical waste and require a safe disposal system to contain them for disposal. Council recommends residents use the Australian standard yellow and black rigid wall plastic sharps containers that are clearly marked with hazardous waste signage to contain their used needles.
Residents using sharps containers are recommended to refer to the Safe disposal of sharps from domestic premises fact sheet or contact Council.
Residents can dispose of their sealed sharps containers in the large sealed yellow sharps bins, located at the four (4) major waste facilities: Bunya, Caboolture, Dakabin and Redcliffe.
drumMUSTER is the national program for the collection and recycling of empty, cleaned, non-returnable crop production and on-farm animal health chemical drums and containers.
The drumMUSTER programme is specifically set up for farm chemical drums ie. drums being disposed of must have a drumMUSTER logo on the container proving the levy has been paid when the chemical was purchased.
All drums must be cleaned thoroughly of all chemical residues. Council waste facility sites participating in this program are Dakabin and Caboolture. At Caboolture residents are requested to provide (2 working days) notice to ensure trained staff will be available on the day.
