Public safety

Public safety has been identified as a high priority for action within the Moreton Bay Regional Council. Key to this notion is that a community that maintains liveable places, community infrastructure and promotes social connection will lead to an improved quality of life for all residents and visitors.

Moreton Bay Regional Council currently operate an extensive network of closed circuit televisions cameras in a range of public places and buildings throughout the region. The cameras help to create a safer environment and reduce crime levels by deterring potential offenders and helping in crime detection.

Access to footage

An application can be made for the release of information under the Right to Information Act 2009. Moreton Bay Regional Council is committed to providing residents with open and transparent access to information about council’s services, activities and business operations. Law enforcement

Law enforcement agencies can submit a request for closed circuit television footage.

Storage of footage

All footage is retained for a period of forty five (45) days, and if no request to access the footage has been made during this period, the electronic media is overwritten. Images may be recorded and retained for a period less than outlined above, during times of upgrading, repair or changeover of information technology and camera software or hardware, or during periods of maintenance or replacement of equipment or assets.

Confidentiality

Moreton Bay Regional Council employs specially trained operators to monitor the closed circuit television cameras. All recordings are treated with the utmost confidentiality, and access is controlled to only those staff who are authorised, and who need access to them. There are strict policies and operating procedures to ensure integrity, confidentiality and the privacy of the community at all times.

Collection Notice

Moreton Bay Regional Council operates a closed circuit television system in this area for security, public safety, crime prevention and service improvement. Your personal information will be collected and may be provided to the Queensland Police Service for law enforcement purposes.

Closed circuit television footage will only be accessed by persons authorised to do so. Personal Information is handled in accordance with privacy legislation and will not be given to any other person or agency unless authorised by law.

Making a formal complaint

If you believe that the Moreton Bay Regional Council closed circuit television cameras has been improperly used against you or someone you know, you can make a formal complaint.
