Up to 20 students in Moreton Bay will walk with the dinosaurs, discover the spiritual home of Waltzing Matilda and learn about the birth of the flying kangaroo with Moreton Bay Regional Council and Winton Shire Council’s 2018 Beach to Bush competition.

Entries are now open for the competition which will see students currently in year five from across Moreton Bay and three of their teachers tour the Winton region from April 18 to 25, 2018.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said on the tour students would get the chance to tour the brand new Waltzing Matilda Centre, explore the country’s dinosaur canyon at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum and experience the red earth and undulating plains of big sky country.

“This is an exciting competition that I encourage all grade Moreton Bay students currently in grade five to enter,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“It’s not every day you get to experience a place whose rich history includes prehistoric creatures, the Great Shearers’ Strike, and the birth of QANTAS and perhaps our country’s best-known bush ballad, Waltzing Matilda.

During the trip, students will stay at the Winton Youth Centre and all food will be provided for.

Mayor Sutherland said to enter, students would need to describe in 200 words or less why they want to take part in the trip and provide a letter of recommendation from their teacher or principal.

“Ideas on what you can write about include telling us why you’re passionate about outback Queensland, what you hope to gain from the trip, your knowledge of Aussie dinosaurs or Banjo Patterson and the stories you can share with your classmates after the trip.

An assessment panel will then review each submission, with the winners to be notified before January 24, 2018.

Mayor Sutherland said the trip is sponsored by Winton Shire Council as part of the Sister City program between both local governments.

“Even though we’re separated by more than 1,350km, Moreton Bay and Winton share a strong bond that is built on the Queensland ideal of mateship and a passion for both the beach and bush.

“I’m excited for our young students to experience the hospitality that Winton is famous for, and to see why our sister city relationship is cherished by both communities.”

Students and teachers have until December 21 to submit their entries.
