Moreton Bay Regional Council has announced a major $7.8 million upgrade for the Morayfield Sports and Event Centre (MSEC) as part of a plan to attract major sporting events and trade shows to the popular indoor hub, and boost the region’s $.178 billion tourism, hospitality and accommodation industry.
Mayor Allan Sutherland said the multimillion-dollar upgrade would see MSEC more than double its existing footprint to 7,000m2 with the construction of two new multipurpose indoor courts and an 1,100m2 modular events space, which can be used for conferences and trade shows.
“Our region is fast-becoming a top destination for major sports events like the recent JLT Cup AFL matches at Burpengary and the Commonwealth Rugby League Championship at Redcliffe, and we want to replicate that success with indoor sports and events,” Mayor Sutherland said.
The upgrade will also include retractable seating with capacity for more than 1,000 spectators, new changerooms and amenities, and commercial kitchen space.
“It’s part of council’s $75.9 million investment in parks, sport and recreation in 2017/18, and importantly, will generate local job opportunities both during and after construction.”
Division 12 Councillor Adrian Raedel said the upgrade would accommodate the growing number of sporting clubs and community groups in the local area.
“Across the region, we expect the number of community and sports groups to increase by more than 50 per cent, which is why it’s important to ensure our major facilities like MSEC are future-proof,” Cr Raedel said.
With Aussies like Ben Simmons and Joe Ingles taking the NBA by storm, basketball and other indoor sports continue to grow in popularity across the country, so I’m pleased that the project will deliver additional sporting facilities for our local clubs.”
Construction will commence in coming May 2018, with works expected to be complete by mid-2019, weather permitting.
