Oakey Flat Road and Walkers Road, Morayfield - Intersection upgrade

The intersection of Oakey Flat Road and Walkers Road is experiencing increasing capacity problems due to traffic growth. It is forecast that traffic delays and queues will increase to unacceptable levels over the next few years unless council intervenes and upgrades the capacity of the intersection. As a result council has listed this intersection for a capital upgrade which is currently programmed from March 2019 until September 2019. Prior to this, service authority relocation works will commence in May 2018 and take several months to complete.

This project aims to improve the operation of the traffic signals at the intersection to reduce congestion and delay (especially at peak times) and improve the intersection’s safety. The project takes into consideration forecast growth in the local area for the next 20 years.

The project is to include:

  • Reconstruction of the road pavement and surfacing;
  • Upgraded traffic signals;
  • Additional traffic lanes including dedicated turn lanes;
  • Signalised pedestrian crossings on each leg;
  • Improved bicycle facilities;
  • Footpath improvements;
  • Landscaping;
  • Relocation of underground and above ground services.

For more details view the information sheet and concept plan [PDF 1.1MB].

During the construction period, it may be necessary to provide diversions, detours, partial lane closures and some reduction in lane widths to allow the construction of the intersection to be undertaken in a safe and efficient manner. Some night construction activities may be undertaken to minimise impacts on day traffic. Patience and caution by drivers will be appreciated whilst the works are underway. Temporary signage and Variable Message Boards (VMS) will be in place as well as traffic controllers.
