What a catch: Moreton Bay snares Ultimate Disc championship

31 August 2017

Moreton Bay’s $14 million AFL precinct at Burpengary will transform into the home of Ultimate Disc when the 21st Halibut championship flies into the region this September.

The facility, which is traditionally the home of Aussies Rules, will host the two-day event on September 2 and 3 after Moreton Bay Regional Council and Queensland Ultimate partnered to bring the event to Moreton Bay for the first time in its two decade history.

Ultimate Disc is an International Olympic Committee-recognised sport played with a flying disc where the basic aim is for the team with the disc to pass it to a teammate in the opposing endzone to score.

The Halibut event traditionally marks the beginning of the Australian Mixed Ultimate season.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Division 2 Councillor Peter Flannery said he was excited to welcome the 250+ players, staff and volunteers from across the country expected to attend Halibut 21.

“Halibut has travelled across SEQ since its inception in 1997, but this will be the first time Moreton Bay plays host. Where better to host the event than in one of Queensland’s premier community sporting facilities,” Cr Flannery said.

“It’s going to be a great showcase of one of the fastest growing sports in one of the fastest growing regions - I can’t wait.

“With teams travelling from as far as Sydney and Townsville, Halibut 21 will inject more than $180,000 into the local economy as competitors and officials take up accommodation and check out local businesses, restaurants and attractions.

“It’s not every day you see a sport that uses Frisbees and combines elements of netball, touch footy and grid iron. I know I’ll be heading along to check it out, and I encourage local residents to check it out as well.”

Queensland Ultimate President Chris Ende said:

“We’re proud to bring this event to the region and to be able to host it at such an amazing venue like the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex - AFL Precinct, Burpengary.

“We’re very grateful for the support of Moreton Bay Regional Council and AFL Queensland.”

The Queensland Ultimate Disc Halibut 21 will run from September 2 to 3 at the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex - AFL Precinct, Burpengary.
