Every region has its own unique feel and aspirations. So how does a Council’s Art Collection represent this?
The Moreton Bay Regional Council Art Collection aims to reflect the vision, diversity and character of the region. Focusing on culture, identity, spirit and sense of place, the Art Collection is an important source of reference and inspiration, which stimulates public discussion and debate, and returns long term cultural benefits to Council and the community of the Moreton Bay Region.
Collecting strands of the Art Collection include, but are not limited to fine art prints, sculpture, ceramics, contemporary works and new media. Strengths of the collection include portraiture, abstract painting, non-functional sculpture and ceramics, as well as artworks by significant artists which directly relate to the Moreton Bay region.
The Moreton Bay Regional Council Art Collection has historical links with the art collections of the former Caboolture Shire Council, Pine Rivers Shire Council and Redcliffe City Council.
The recent acquisitions represented in this exhibition reflect contemporary practice and issues that traverse cultural divides. The ubiquitous questions around who we are, where we live, what we do and what defines us are all represented in these works. The artists are predominantly from Queensland with many from the region. But, sometimes, artists from further afield can cast an inquisitive eye on our corner of the world, or awaken a long forgotten memory, and surprise us with clarity of vision.
The works in Feeling for Place don’t define our region in absolute terms. Rather, they hint at the diversity of our community and open up dialogue about who we are.
