Australia Day Awards Program

The Australia Day Awards Program offers Council the opportunity to recognise the valuable achievements of individuals who contribute to the vibrancy of Moreton Bay community life across the Region.

The winners of the 2018 Moreton Bay Regional Council Australia Day Awards were announced at the Australia Day Awards Ceremony held on Thursday 18 January, 2018 at Ocean View Estates, Ocean View. View the previous winners.

Nomination timeframe

Nominations are invited annually from individuals and community organisations over eight weeks from September through to October.

Nominations may be submitted online on from 1 September and will close at 5:00pm EST on 31 October, 2018. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Program eligibility

Nominees for the Australia Day Awards Program must, at the time of nomination:

  • be an Australian Citizen;
  • reside within the Moreton Bay region;
  • be nominated by a person or persons other than themselves;
  • not be involved in the administration of the Australia Day Awards Program (including the selection process);
  • not be a sitting member of State, Federal or Local Government; and
  • nominees must be aged 18 years or under as at 26 January of the Awards year to be eligible for the Young Citizen of the Year and Youth Sports Award.

Award categories & how to nominate

The Australia Day Awards program offers seven award categories.

Citizen of the Year

Recognises an individual for their outstanding contribution to the Moreton Bay community during the preceding year, or over numerous years. The winner will be an inspirational role model for the community and demonstrate a continued commitment to their field.

Young Citizen of the Year

Recognises a young person (18 years and below) for their outstanding contribution to the Moreton Bay community during the preceding year, or over numerous years. The winner will be an inspirational role model for the community and demonstrate a continued commitment to their field.

Volunteer of the Year

Recognises the exemplary volunteer service and contribution of an individual to the Moreton Bay community during the preceding year, or over numerous years.

Sports Award

Celebrates an individual for their sporting achievements during the preceding year and their contribution towards the sporting achievements of the region.

Youth Sports Award

Celebrates a young person (18 years and below) for their sporting achievements during the preceding year and their contribution towards the sporting achievements of the region.

Arts and Culture Award

Celebrates an individual for their creative achievements during the preceding year and their contribution towards the arts and cultural achievement of the region.

Environment Award

Celebrates an individual for their environmental achievements during the preceding year and their contribution towards the preservation and maintenance of the region's natural environment.

Selection

Nominated individuals will be assessed by an internal Selection Panel.

Nominees will be scored against the following selection criteria:

  • Contribution to the Moreton Bay community;
  • Commitment and contribution in their field;
  • Inspirational role model for the Moreton Bay community; and
  • Demonstrated achievement in their field (Sports, Arts & Culture and Environment Awards only).

The Australia Day Awards Selection Panel is comprised of five (5) Council assessors.

The Selection Panel may seek additional information from other sources that are deemed appropriate and relevant to the assessment of the nomination.

If nominations are either limited or not of a sufficiently high standard, the panel reserves the right not to recommend an award for a particular category.

Winners will be announced on the Friday before Australia Day 2019. Nominees are encouraged to refer to the website for updates.
