July 1 - You and your waste

Several important changes have occurred to the way council collects, handles and processes waste and recyclable materials.

Some are linked to council’s waste services contracts, which now provide residents with access to new services designed to complement our region’s waste collection and recycling initiatives.

Others are directly related to the introduction of the State Government’s new waste disposal levy, which is being rolled out in 39 council areas across the state. The Queensland Government has placed the responsibility, the associated costs of implementing and the ongoing operation of its waste levy on landfill operators and local councils. It has also committed to ensuring the levy has no direct impact on households. 

The Queensland Government is providing payments to councils and residents with commercial waste collection services to cover the cost of household waste going to landfill.

Over the past few months, council has been working hard preparing and laying the foundations for the changes.

Our focus has been to try and minimise any service inconveniences to residents and businesses, but be prepared for increased waiting and disposal times at council’s waste facilities due to new processes and reporting requirements associated with the implementation of the waste levy.

Your understanding and patience while our community initially adapts to the service impacts of this levy is appreciated. More information to help you plan, prepare and adapt to the changes is available, including:

The changes will ultimately provide our community with a wider range of waste disposal and resource recovery options, while helping to contribute to a more sustainable future for our region and state.
