Canals

Canals are artificial waterways connected or intended to be connected to tidal water with boating access available.

Special rates are charged for services, facilities and activities that have a special association with canal frontage. Refer to Council's Budget and Operational Plan for details.

Maintenance of canals

Canal revetment walls(PDF, 2MB) are the responsibility of the property owner, including maintenance and ultimate replacement. The type of canal determines the applications required for maintenance works:

  • An operational works application must be submitted to undertake work within a tidal canal
  • Works behind a lock are not considered tidal and must be assessed by a building certifier.

Pontoons

An operational works application must be submitted to undertake work (e.g. pontoons) within a tidal canal. Works behind a lock are not considered tidal and must be assessed by a building certifier. State Government may need to be consulted in some instances. Additional requirements depend on the canal area. Contact Council for more information.

Newport waterways, Newport

  • Pontoon Envelope Guideline(PDF, 1MB)
    Determines appropriate dimensions for new pontoons within the Newport canals to minimise the potential for damage to a pontoon through grounding and assists when upgrading, replacing or installing a new pontoon.
