All native animals are protected by law. The aim of wildlife rescue, care and rehabilitation is to provide proper care and rehabilitation for sick or injured animals before releasing them back to their natural environment.
Unless you are a registered wildlife carer, you are not permitted to keep, raise or rehabilitate native wildlife.
Put your own safety first - check that the environment around you is free of risks, contain the animal only if it is safe to do so, and ring a registered wildlife rescue group.
NEVER handle flying-foxes or bats. Phone the relevant rescue group and a specialised, vaccinated and trained rescuer will attend.
If you have found a deceased animal on public land or a dog is harassing a koala, contact Council.
For further information about first aid for wildlife, or for details of licensed wildlife carers in your area, contact the Department of Environment and Science.
