Education and Research

Council has engaged in a transformative project, The Mill at Moreton Bay. This Priority Development Area (PDA) will be home to the first greenfield university built in Australia in 20 years, boost the state’s economy by $950 million and will attract unprecedented catalytic infrastructure and investment in this region.

It’s strategic location on two train lines, with a station at the campus’ front door, positions this site as an innovation precinct like no other in the country. Within a decade, 10,000 students will call this campus home, lifting the region’s tertiary participation rate. Council’s vision for this site - 20 hectares bigger than the Brisbane CBD - is that it will become home to innovators, research facilities, health and knowledge centres and importantly provide civic space for the community.

The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) is using The Mill at Moreton Bay to expand their presence in the region. The USC satellite campus in Caboolture has several research initiatives based in the north of the region. This research includes investigations into alternative health service delivery and a significant clinical trial site providing new capacity to accelerate the research and development of the next generation of medications and medical devices.

The Moreton Bay Region is also home to Queensland’s only aquaculture research facility. The CSIRO, DAF and USC are all based at the Bribie Island Research Centre and undertaking public and private research projects in this field.

Through our Economic Development Action Plan council is actively seeking connections to ensure the Moreton Bay Region has the facilities and capabilities to support the fast-growing sector of international education.

In the Moreton Bay Region you'll find:

  • a comprehensive teaching and research university campus at USC Moreton Bay
  • 14% of the population hold a bachelor's degree or higher
  • a skilled education and training workforce
  • the key growth corridor of Brisbane.
