Unregistered cat and dog systematic inspection program

All cats and dogs in the City of Moreton Bay are required to be registered in accordance with:

  • Cats - Animal Management Local Law 2023
  • Dogs - Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008

There are many responsible cat and dog owners in the region. However, at present, there are cat and dog owners that, on our records, have not paid their current registration. Additionally, there is a likelihood of a significant number of cat and dog owners across the region who have not registered their cat and/or dog at all.

If a programmed approach to the registration of cats and dogs is not introduced, there is potential for increased non-compliance and complacency amongst cat and dog owners. This diminishes Council’s capacity in addressing issues regarding the keeping of a cat and/or dog in the region.

For this reason, on 3 May 2023, Council approved systematic inspection programs for both unregistered cats and dogs.

Approved systematic inspection program for cats

Council will conduct a systematic inspection program in accordance with the Local Government Act 2009 - Section 134 (Approving an inspection program).

Purpose

The purpose of the program is to inspect all properties in the region to determine the existence of unregistered cats and take appropriate action for:

  • Cat registrations not renewed on Council’s records for 2022/23 and 2023/24
  • Unregistered cats not currently on Council’s records

The period of the program

The program will be conducted from:

  • Program 1: 1 July 2023 to 30 September 2023
  • Program 2: 1 October 2023 to 15 December 2023
  • Program 3: 8 January 2024 to 31 March 2024
  • Program 4: 1 April 2024 to 30 June 2024

Objective

The objective is to ensure all cats in the region, either on Council records or new identified cats, are registered in accordance with Animal Management Local Law 2023.

The program permits authorised officers to enter properties within the boundaries of the local government area. Officers will carry identification and produce it upon attendance.

A copy of the Council resolution authorising the approved inspection program can be viewed free of charge at Council’s administration offices.
