Cat and dog registration fees and fee exemptions

Registration period for cats and dogs is 1 October to 30 September.  

Animal registration renewals for the 2023/2024 will be issued in late August for payment by 30 September 2023.

Animals that are approved for registration exemption are required to complete the Animal Registration Application(PDF, 744KB) and submit with supporting documentation.

Cat - Desexed

Council accepts the following evidence of proof of desexing:

  • desexing certificate
  • letter from a vet stating the animal is desexed
  • registration papers from another council showing animal is desexed
  • official adoption documentation from a registered animal shelter.

Cat - Desexed, with concession Evidence of desexing and pension concession is required. A copy of a pension concession card issued from Centrelink or Veteran Affairs is to be submitted along with a completed Animal Registration form or a Pension Concession application form.

Cat - Recognised Association Concession

Concessions are available for non desexed dogs and cats when the registered owner has membership with the following:

  • Cats Queensland Inc
  • Feline Control Council of Queensland Inc
  • Queensland Feline Association Inc.

Proof of current membership must be provided to Council on an annual basis.

Exempted from registration fees
Assistance Dogs

Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dogs are exempt from registration fees if they comply with:

  • Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dogs Act 2009 or
  • the Assistance Dogs Act 2009 or
  • the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

A copy of the Handler's ID Card or proof of certification with a recognised organisation must be submitted.

Foster Animals

Recognised foster carer of cats or dogs are exempt from registration fees, to be considered for a registration fee exemption:

  • foster animal must be registered under organisation name and foster carer's address
  • a letter from the recognised organisation identifying the individual carer must be submitted to Council.

Cat or Dog - Transfer from another Council Council does not charge an initial registration fee for animals transferring from another council that is in the name of the applicant and evidence of current registration is provided with the animal registration application. 42833

Exempted from registration
Government Entity Dogs Dogs on active duty for a government entity (agency) are exempt from registration. Proof of registration with Queensland Police Service or a Commonwealth Organisation must be provided to validate exemption. T353 T353
Working Dogs

Working dogs that are kept on rural land and used for work purposes as stated in the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 are exempt from registration. An ABN and Working Dog - self assessment checklist(PDF, 745KB) must be provided to validate the exemption.

Canine Plasma Dogs  Dogs kept primarily for the production of canine plasma products are exempt from Council registration. Under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001, the dog owner is required to provide proof of the use of the dog for that purpose. T353 T353
