From 7 May to 5 June 2022, areas of the Moreton Bay Region will be transformed into vibrant outdoor galleries featuring the artwork of six talented local artists.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Council is offering an outdoor gallery experience throughout Moreton Bay, with our busiest roads being activated by colourful, impactful contemporary art.

“Investing in our local arts sector is a priority for Council and the Outdoor Gallery is a new initiative as part of the 2022 Moreton Bay Region Art Prize. This opportunity is designed to support local artists to create artwork at a large scale for display across the beautiful outdoor spaces in our region for everyone to enjoy,” he said.

“6 pieces of artwork printed on two vinyl banners each will be displayed in high traffic areas across Moreton Bay. This provides a unique opportunity for local artists to have their artwork seen by thousands of people who live in and visit our region. It also offers residents and commuters delightful and unexpected encounters with vibrant contemporary artwork as they go about their daily lives. It is a win-win for the community.

“These artworks will offer a creative outdoor experience as you travel through our region, and at the end of the Outdoor Gallery, the vinyl banners will be upcycled into tote bags and sold in Council’s Art Gallery shops. This ensures a second creative outcome with no material going to landfills.

“I’m confident that seeing these artworks will add a dash of whimsy, wonder and joy, to how locals and visitors see and experience the everyday places where we live, work and play across our region. Viewing our surroundings with fresh eyes is one of the key functions of temporary art in public spaces.”

66 local artists submitted their artwork for the inaugural Outdoor Gallery opportunity with six artists selected as finalists.

Outdoor Gallery judge Beth Jackson of Artfully was impressed by the wealth of creative talent in Moreton Bay.

“These artworks represent an exciting range of approaches that feature works of connection, rich organic colours and textures and will no doubt have memorable appeal to passers-by,” she said.
