Roses are red, violets are blue, Moreton Bay Region is hosting a Poetry Slam and Masterclass for… ugh, you? Well, you know how poetry goes.

There’ll be no dark and stormy nights this August 5 when professional slammer Angela Peita hosts an online Slam Masterclass from 5.30-7.30pm.

It will then be followed a week later by the Queensland Poetry Festival, Australian Poetry Slam heats for Moreton Bay Region on August 12 from 6.30-8.30pm.

Mayor Peter Flannery encouraged newcomers and wily old veterans to take part in both events if they dreamed of becoming the Edgar Allan Poe of the 21st century.

“This is a great opportunity for all aspiring writers and performers that should be taken with both hands,” he said.

“Angela Peita is a powerful spoken word performer, who has appeared at our very own Woodford Folk Festival multiple times.

“I think you’d be wise to soak up everything she has to offer, especially if you are looking to enter the Poetry Slam heats a week later.

“Two deserving contestants from that event will progress to the state final at the Queensland Poetry Festival, and winners from there will have a chance to compete in front of a crowd at the Sydney Opera House for a shot at national glory.

“So go ahead and do Moreton Bay proud if you consider yourself a wordsmith or someone who loves the spotlight.”

Contestants will have two minutes to perform their original spoken word poetry online to win over a digital audience and judges.
