Footy is back and the Pine Rivers Bears have kicked their season off with the exciting unveiling of a brand new amenities block at their Mathieson Park home ground.

The $950,000 project includes the construction of four universal changerooms, referees’ rooms, PWD amenities and game day operations shed to support female and male rugby league training and fixtures.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the project was a great example of how Council is investing in community infrastructure and in the future growth of sport in the Moreton Bay Region.

“We have seen a surge in sport participation since the COVID restrictions eased,” Cr Flannery said.

“The project is a practical investment that will assist the growth of the club and support universal participation for years to come.

“This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when different levels of government work together, and I thank the state government for partnering with us to make this project a reality.

“On top of the $387,000 secured by local member Shane King, Council has contributed $565,000 towards building these new facilities.”

Member for Kurwongbah Shane King said he was excited to see the new changerooms in action and how their addition has changed the face of Mathieson Park.

“I have been pushing for this project with the Pine Rivers Bears for years and now it’s finally a reality!,” he said.

“I would like to thank Council, in particular Councillor Mick Gillam and our Mayor Peter Flannery, for their incredible contribution to this project.

“Getting kids into sport keeps them, and parents, engaged and involved in our community.”

Divisional Councillor Mick Gillam said the new facilities will be a game-changer for the growing club.

“These new facilities will not only support the club’s 327 current members, but will allow the club to grow, potentially attracting students from the new USC campus which is only a short walk away,” Cr Gillam said.

“It will also encourage more girls to play footy with 27 female players already signed up to play for the Bears.

“I think they’ve got a big future in this region and I’m excited to see this project complete.”
