Acclaimed author and journalist, social researcher and commentator, Hugh Mackay, is coming to North Lakes Community Hall on Saturday, 30 March for a free Q&A session on the topic of Why Neighbourhoods Matter.

Hugh is an ambassador for Neighbourhood Day (30 March), a national initiative to encourage people to build better relationships with one another and in doing so, transform their communities into compassionate, inclusive and resilient places.

In an era where people bemoan the state of the nation, Hugh challenges people to follow Ghandi’s advice and be the change they want to see in the world.

“We can have a powerful influence on the state of the various communities we belong to – in the neighbourhood, the workplace, the university, the church or other faith community, the sporting association, the book club or other community organisation,” Hugh said in his celebrated Ghandi oration at the University of New South Wales in 2017.

“How we contribute to the miniatures of life – in our own family, street, suburb or town – will ultimately help to determine the big picture.”

Council Spokesperson for Lifestyle and Amenity Denise Sims said the Q&A session was a coup for Moreton Bay, with the famous orator only making a few stopovers on this visit to South East Queensland.

“The strength of our relationships with one another and by extension, the strength of our communities, helps set a vibrant and inclusive direction for the region,” Cr Sims said.

Councillor for Division 4 Julie Greer encouraged residents book online early before limited places ran out.

“Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear Hugh’s thought-provoking views on Why Neighbourhoods Matter right here in North Lakes,” Cr Greer said.

Hugh Mackay’s Why Neighbourhoods Matter Q&A session is being held at the North Lakes Community Hall on Level 2 at The Corso.

Doors open at 9:30 AM for a 10:00 AM start. The Q&A session will run until midday and will be followed by a book signing. For more information, visit council’s website.
