Dayboro Park's getting a makeover

Moreton Bay Regional Council is planning to expand and revitalise Roderick A Cruice Park, creating a beautiful multi-use green space right in the heart of the township of Dayboro.
Council has acquired land at the intersection of Heathwood Street and Williams Street in an area where the community has informally used spaces for the annual Dayboro Day Festival and monthly Sunday market events for many years. The development of the park and street frontages will formalise these activities which already historically operated on the site.
Mayor Peter Flannery said this is part of Council’s commitment to create beautiful parks and open spaces for our communities to enjoy outdoor activities and promote healthy and active lifestyles right across the region.
“Parks are a quintessential part of our village life; they are vital vibrant spaces where people can gather, and this is especially true for Dayboro.
“Since 1970, Roderick A Cruice Park has given residents and visitors a shady retreat right in the heart of town, it’s been host to the village markets and a place of community celebrations or a quick pit-stop for travellers.
“With the additional land we can expand on the park’s current facilities, create better places and spaces for events for residents and visitors to enjoy, provide inclusive and accessible community facilities and a much needed space for local business and community organisations to host activities all within the town centre.
“Before we start creating a design, Council is asking the community to share with us their ideas and aspirations so we can build a space that people will use, love and be proud to call their own”, he said.
Councillor Darren Grimwade said we want to hear from the community; their stories and discover the local experiences and desires they have for the area, so we can create a space people can enjoy.
“Having a better understanding of how the community, local business and markets use this space will help us to plan for an amazing multi-use area right in the heart of the township of Dayboro.
“We want to hear from you and start to visualise what could be delivered as part of this project.
“We’re thinking better walking paths and shady spots for picnicking with improved green areas, more plants and landscaping features; more fun spaces and equipment for kids to play and a central grassed areas for big events; opportunities to display artworks, signage and recognising cultural heritage and upgrades to seating, lighting, drinking fountains, bins and toilets,” he said.
The need for a regional civic park in the Dayboro areas was identified in Council’s Urban Recreational Park Plan to meet Council’s standard of service for parks and open spaces in the area while encouraging active and healthy lifestyles.
Residents can register to share their stories and ideas at Council’s Storytelling Workshop on Wednesday 20 October from 5-7pm at the Dayboro Showgrounds, or come and have a chat with our team at the Dayboro markets on 7 November from 9-11am.
