Council’s campaign to secure a water rebate for flood impacted residents has been a success.

Unitywater today confirmed it will provide a $50 rebate to impacted customers.

Acting Mayor Jodie Shipway thanked Unitywater for responding so quickly to Council’s campaign, saying it was only right given how quick locals were to respond to the flood clean-up and recovery.

“This $50 rebate is equivalent to the average amount of water a family of four uses in two weeks or running a garden hose for eight hours straight,” Cr Shipway said.

“These people have already gone through enough, so I’m pleased they’ll now have the peace of mind of knowing their next water bill won’t be inflated by flood clean-up costs.

“I thank Unitywater for promptly responding to our calls to refund excess water charges accumulated during the recent disaster clean-up.

“Inspecting flood damage around our region I saw locals out with their hoses and pressure cleaners not only washing down mud from their own homes, but also helping their neighbours and even starting to clean public infrastructure. Such is the spirit of our community.

“I hope this water rebate is another small way to help residents get back on their feet, and I encourage people in flood-hit areas to get online and apply as soon as possible.

“Council has already announced a flood relief package for our residents, which included a one-off $250 rates relief for those who suffered significant damage from the disaster.

“We have also given ratepayers an extra 30 days to pay their rates, and we released a $1 million Flood Recovery Fund for community and sports clubs to help them get back to normal as quickly as possible.

“Moreton Bay is united in recovery, but we need to do everything we possibly can to help our most affected residents and businesses so we can get back to normal as quickly as possible.”

Flood impacted Unitywater customers will be able to apply for the $50 rebate online. The application form can be found at https://www.unitywater.com/about-us/contact-us/flood-rebate.

Unitywater customers have until 31 May 2022 to complete the application form. Once approved, the rebate will appear on the customer’s next bill after the application closing date of 31 May 2022.
