Council powering community groups through COVID with generous $1 lease

Moreton Bay Regional Council has given three local clubs a new lease on life by awarding them with nominal lease arrangements over Council-owned facilities to call home.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Kallangur Scouts, Narangba Scouts and Redcliffe Outrigger Canoe Club all received new multi-year lease arrangements that will give them long-term security.

“Moreton Bay Region now has more than 400 community clubs, groups, organisations and non-for-profits who benefit from a nominal $1 per annum lease for Council facilities,” he said.

“I’m proud to be one of the most generous Council’s in South East Queensland when it comes to supporting our community groups.

“Kallangur Scouts, Narangba Scouts and Redcliffe Outrigger Canoe Club all provide great services to the community and it’s these clubs and groups that make up the social fabric of Moreton Bay Region.

“COVID has been tough on everyone so it’s great to know that these groups will be able to keep firing on all cylinders and provide an outlet for residents.

“It’s also been tough on the people who run these community groups and organisations, so it’s great to be able to give them piece of mind knowing that they will have a long-term home.

“They don’t have to worry about the stress of paying huge rental bills to hire facilities and it means they can get on with serving the community.

“They’re getting a Council-quality standard facility which we also help to maintain, including mowing lawns and other maintenance.

“Council also provided an extra $3 million worth of grants to community groups and clubs as part of one of our COVID-stimulus package to keep them going when they needed it most.

“I’ve even heard whispers some community groups across the border in Brisbane want to jump ship to Moreton Bay Region just to get one of our leases.”
