Moreton Bay Regional Council has released its final report on the Community Plan 2011-2021, reflecting on its major achievements in making this region the greatest place to live, work and play.

Mayor Peter Flannery said, as a long-term resident and councillor, I’ve experienced first-hand the massive transformation this region has undergone over the past decade.

“We’ve grown and we’ve prospered to create the thriving communities we have today.

“While there’s countless activities to mention, the most ground-breaking has been the amalgamation of our Council.

“This action alone was the catalyst for supercharging the region bringing with it the bigger budgets and better coordination and delivery of projects needed to transform and build on all of the great things we have in Moreton Bay.

“Our biggest investment has been the $108 million we contributed to deliver the Moreton Bay Rail Link, building more than 12.6 kilometres of dual track between Petrie and Kippa-Ring along with six new stations and more than 13 kilometres of shared use pathway stretching the length of the project.

“This was the project they said would never happen but was made possible by this Council.

“Not to mention securing our very own university campus with the University of the Sunshine Coast at The Mill with this innovation precinct is set to transform our economy for generations to come.

“We have all benefited from the synergy this brought and is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when we work as one.

“With what we have to offer, it’s no surprise people have been flocking to our region and it’s why we’re one of the largest and fastest growing local areas in the country.

“In the past decade, we’ve welcomed over 100,000 people and new generations of families who are enjoying the enviable and vibrant lifestyle for which we are renown.

“Council has delivered a record program of work opening opportunities for business with a focus on strong communities and healthy and active lifestyles for our residents.”

Other initiatives included:

  • Creating the Moreton Bay Koala Conservation Partnership Project to help secure the long-term sustainability of koala populations in the region.
  • Partnering with our communities as part of Council’s Bushcare Program planting over 46,666 trees per year on average.
  • $25.5 million to rejuvenate the seaside Redcliffe precinct with a new art gallery and kept the music alive at our famous Bee Gees Way.
  • $26.2 million for the Caboolture Hub Library, Regional Art Gallery, Business and Learning Centre, an award-winning community and business venue right in the heart of the Caboolture CBD.
  • $45.3 million for North Lakes Library and Community Centre as part of the 5-star environmentally friendly Corso Complex in the heart of North lakes Town Centre.
  • Creating Moreton Alert service to warn residents of impending natural disasters.
  • $13 million in grants to community organisations to support local community, cultural, sporting and environmental
  • $367 million in building and major renovations to community, sport and recreation facilities throughout the region.
  • Establishing a CCTV network of over 1,450 cameras across the region to improve community safety and protect council assets.
  • Implementing a roll-out of 700 smart technologies like sensors, smart light nodes, smart car charging capabilities.

“This is just a snapshot of the 1000s of community and capacity building initiatives delivered by Council since 2011.

“We have and will continue to deliver initiatives to protect the natural beauty and enviable lifestyle on offer in the region and the things our residents love most about living here.

“We have big ambitions for the next decade and you can expect to see bigger and bolder action from Council.

“We are actively progressing game-changing initiatives to further enhance the Moreton Bay Region’s lifestyle, so expect to see some great things from Council”, Mayor Flannery said.
