Celebrate diversity this Harmony Week

As one of the most culturally diverse regions in Australia, Moreton Bay is a vibrant melting pot for over 180 different nationalities.

Instead of letting cultural differences divide us, Council is using Harmony Week to unite its citizens through a celebration of diversity.

With a range of free events on offer across the region, Acting Mayor Mike Charlton encouraged everyone to get involved, regardless of their cultural background.

“Here in the Moreton Bay Region, Council is proud to promote inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone,” he said.

“Our diverse community attracts citizens from all corners of the globe, resulting in the rich combination of culture, tradition and cuisine that makes our region so unique.

“As part of Council’s Harmony Week funding program, we were delighted to offer grants to six different community organisations including the Caboolture Neighbourhood Centre which is hosting a welcome lunch for Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Strathpine.

“Harmony Week is all about community participation, so with one in four of us born overseas, it’s a great opportunity to celebrate our own cultural background and share it with others.

“Everyone’s invited to Council’s free community events, so come along to Pine Rivers Art Gallery where you can create a temporary art installation with friends or immerse yourself in Maori culture at one of our exclusive library events.

“Harmony Week is held from 15 - 21 March, and it serves as an important reminder that everybody belongs. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and it’s what makes the Moreton Bay Region such a great place to live.”
