Budget 2019-20 Division 8 - Making it easier to live, work and play

Moreton Bay Region’s history and future will intersect in Division 8, with investments to both celebrating how far we’ve come as well as keeping the region focused on the journey ahead.

Division 8 Councillor Mick Gillam said this year’s Budget would have a community focus to help locals get around the region more efficiently and safely than ever.

“We want people living in the suburban areas of Moreton Bay Region to be able to get wherever they need as quickly as possible,” he said.

“Whether you’re taking the kids to school, getting to work, going to a sports complex to make a team commitment; we don’t want you wasting your day stuck in traffic.

“Which is why we’re investing $671,000 this financial year for resurfacing local roads and even more for major road upgrades.

“There is $510,000 to renew a 312-metre section of Bells Pocket Road in Lawnton, $500,000 for planning to upgrade intersections along Youngs Crossing Road at Francis Road and Oxford Street, including major cross drainage culvert improvement, and $450,000 to finish the upgrade of Samsonvale Road between Dundee Street and Elmwood Drive in Bray Park.

“If you catch the bus, rather than drive, then I have good news for residents in Lawnton and Warner who can look forward to new bus stop shelters.

“This Budget also pays respect to where we’ve come from with $370,000 allocated to create a new interpretive facility in Leis Park explaining the history of crossings over the Pine River, and $40,000 to start planning for the construction of a new internal road and car park.

“This project will include landscaping and interpretative signage designed to feature historical infrastructure that’s been recovered from the old railway.”

Cr Gillam said there would also be significant investment in sporting infrastructure.

“Les Hughes Sports Complex will receive $1 million to start the $6.5 million overhaul to convert a baseball diamond into a senior rugby union field with irrigation and lighting, and extending the clubhouse,” he said.

“We’ll also construct 159 car parks and upgrade the internal roadways to provide appropriate vehicle access.

“Extreme sport fans will welcome the planning and concept designs for a parkour park within the Les Hughes sports precinct, at a cost of $20,000.

“We’re also replacing old playground equipment or building new infrastructure in Norman L Reilly Park, Gerard Street Park and Brownwell Street Park.

“We’ll also start planning to build new change rooms at Rob Akers Reserve in Strathpine worth $50,000.”
