Budget 2019-20 Division 7 - Going green

Published 03 June 2019

Road investments are the centrepiece spend for Division 7 this Budget, with more than $8 million in road infrastructure projects to be trucked out this financial year.

Divisional Councillor Denise Sims said she’d also made sure wildlife corridors and waterways were getting significant attention.

“I’m thrilled to announce $500,000 for further rejuvenation works at Murrumba Downs’ Black Duck Lake System,” she said.

“This will enable us to revegetate the entire lake system and convert the lake inlet areas into free-draining swales, improving the water quality for the resident fish and birdlife.

“At Merv Ewart Reserve in Petrie, council will invest $215,000 to protect Sideling Creek against erosion and plant native species which will provide filtration of nutrients and sediment to improve fauna habitats.

“This financial year will also see the commencement of Stage 1 of the rehabilitation of Freshwater Creek in Kallangur’s Ross Reserve Park, with $25,000 to plant native species.

“And as we build more roads to keep our region better connected than ever, we also need to build more fauna crossings.

“So part of the massive $1.6 million spend allocated to the intersection upgrade at Narangba Road and Torrens Road in Kurwongbah will be dedicated to a fauna rope bridge, road stencilling, wildlife signage, fencing and also streetscaping.

“This project will reduce delays on the Torrens Road leg of the intersection and significantly improve safety for all road users by upgrading the existing priority-controlled intersection to a three-leg signalised intersection, and wouldn’t be possible without funding from the Australian Government under the Black Spot program.

“Another $1.61 million will be invested on road resurfacing around Division 7 as well as another $1 million for the rehabilitation of Alma Road in Dakabin between Marsden Road and Shepherdson Street, with construction getting underway soon.

“Road surface concerns along areas of Youngs Crossing Road in Petrie will be addressed, with $980,000 to renew a 490-metre stretch between Dayboro Road down to the floodway. An improved crossing for pedestrians and cyclists will also be built north of the causeway crossing as part of the rehabilitation.

“There’s $500,000 to complete the service relocations ahead of the road upgrades road at Brays Road and $200,000 to complete engineering planning for a new drainage outlet under the North Coast Railway Line in Petrie to address the flooding along Anzac Avenue.”

Cr Sims said there would also be substantial improvements to local sporting and recreational infrastructure, with $1.49 million for the expansion of Blatchford Sporting and Recreational Reserve, $270,000 for a playground renewal in John Oxley Reserve, and $250,000 to make the playing surface at Bob Brock Park in Dakabin more durable and safe.
