Budget 2019-20 Division 5 - Millions in coastal protection and sport

Councillor for Division 5 James Houghton said the 2019/20 Budget would deliver more than $7 million in investment into public spaces and roads across Division 5 over the coming financial year, including $3.2 million for the next phase of the Nathan Road Sporting Precinct in Rothwell.

“We are looking forward to the construction of the clubhouse which will feature a commercial grade kitchen, club room and change rooms for players and officials,” Cr Houghton said.

“Once complete, this sporting precinct will be the new home of the Redcliffe Tigers — boasting a dedicated main AFL field which backs onto a newly created conservation wetland, as well as a large grassed multipurpose area and a playground for the kids.”

Cr Houghton said a first order priority was to protect Scarborough’s iconic Red Cliffs from erosion with $1.5 million allocated in the Budget 2019/20.

“Now that we have all of the relevant approvals from the State Government, I hope that we can go out to market soon for the stabilisation of Scarborough’s iconic Red Cliffs,” Cr Houghton said.

“Wind and waves continue to undermine and erode a 360-metre section of the Red Cliffs to the north of Scarborough Beach Park.

“By taking proactive measures now, we can help reduce the risk of the cliffs destabilising further and encroaching into Landsborough Avenue.

“It’s paramount that we protect the iconic namesake of the Redcliffe Peninsula for the enjoyment of future generations.”

Division 5 will also benefit from a $214,000 streetscape project to revitalise the shopping precinct along Landsborough Avenue between Bunton Street and Rock Street, as well as nearly $600,000 for road resurfacing.

Six bus stops will also be upgraded to the tune of $200,000 including two on Deception Bay Road two on Klingner Road and one each on both Oxley Avenue and Scarborough Road.
