Budget 2019-20 Division 4 - Sporting and community enhancements

Griffin Sports Complex will get $5 million as part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s 19/20 Budget.

Councillor Julie Greer said Griffin was a booming sports community, and this announcement was a critical step towards delivering the first stage of a $15 million district level sporting and recreation precinct by 2021.

“It’s a major win for local families that will add to the 929ha of dedicated council parkland and environmental reserves in the local area,” she said.

“Griffin is a community predominantly of young families, with almost 30 per cent aged 15 years and under, and it’s important we provide them with sporting and recreation opportunities close to home.”

Cr Greer said Stage 1 would include the construction of a new access off Henry Road, car parking spaces, two multipurpose fields, turf field, club house, amenities, field lighting and irrigation.

In keeping with healthy and active communities, Cr Greer said she was pleased to announce $50,000 towards the detailed planning of a new netball precinct at Kinsellas playing fields.

“The project includes a new club house with a canteen, club room and amenities, four hard courts with lighting, sideline shelters and seating and car parking,” she said.

“As the North Lakes Blues Netball Club grows in popularity this project will provide the team with a dedicated netball training facility.”

Cr Greer said in addition to investing in vital sporting infrastructure, council had also allocated more than $3.5 million to upgrade local roads across Division 4.

“This investment reinforces council’s ongoing commitment to improving our local road network that residents rely on.”

Cr Greer said council had also earmarked $8 million for the construction of a new depot at Boundary Road including office accommodation, fleet workshop and storage sheds.

“Moreton Bay’s population is booming and North Lakes is at the heart of this growth,” she said.

“It’s in the strategic interests of council to have our depots located where service demand is increasing.

“The North Lakes depot will also have easy access to the Bruce Highway, meaning crews can easily travel to other parts of the region to respond to requests and help address priority issues quickly.”

Division 4 budget highlights Include:

  • $8 million for Boundary Road Council Depot development
  • $5 million for stage 1 of Griffin Sports Complex
  • $1.75 million for initial road reconstruction works at Henry Road and the intersection with Dohles Rocks Road and additional funding has been committed to this project thanks to the Australian Government
  • $660,000 for road, footpath and drainage upgrades at Alice Street
  • $382,000 for road resurfacing across Division 4
  • $255,000 towards pavement testing and design costs for intersection and road rehabilitation at Boundary Road
  • $215,000 to create a pathway and bridge for pedestrians and cyclists around Halpine Lake
  • $200,000 towards site planning costs for a wetland at Fern Parade Park to improve water quality in the lower Pine River catchment
  • $200,000 for lake rectification works at Halpine Lake
  • $175,000 for asbestos remediation at Griffin Environmental Reserve
  • $110,000 for drainage treatment upgrades at Halpine Lake
  • $75,000 towards design costs for road reconstruction at Chelmsford Road
  • $75,000 for playground renewal at Ultramarine Park
  • $70,000 to renew the stairs and wooden stage at Osprey House
  • $50,000 towards design costs for a signalised intersection at the Mango Hill Boulevard and Bonnet Parade intersection
  • $50,000 towards planning for a new netball precinct at Kinsellas Playing Fields
  • $43,500 for carpark lighting at Kallangur Community Hall
  • $40,000 for minor building fit outs at environmental centres across Division 4
  • $27,000 for bus stop works at Endeavour Boulevard
  • $27,000 for a truck turnaround at Natham Street for waste collection
