Moreton Bay nets big sporting and economic scalp

Forget Sunshine and Gold Coasts, this year the Australian Beach Netball competition is coming to Moreton Bay Region!

The one-day sports carnival on March 7 will transform Suttons Beach into a festival of sport with music and entertainment to wow the crowds.

Spokesperson for Parks, Recreation & Sports Councillor Koliana Winchester said locals wouldn’t want to miss any of the elite-level action or fun right here in Redcliffe.

“This event is not only a great way to get outdoors and get fit, but it’s also predicted to bring 1625 people to the region,” she said.

“They’re estimated to spend roughly $409,500 in local restaurants, bars, cafes and on other tourism operators in what will be a big shot in the arm for the economy.

“Council is very proud to have secured Australia Beach Netball and shows we are doing everything we can assist our local businesses.”

Beach netball is a unique sport that combines rules from netball, basketball, volleyball and football. There are no thirds, so players can stay involved at every opportunity.

It creates an opportunity for players to get together for a weekend away that combines sport and the outdoors in a great location, with 90 per cent of competitors travelling from outside the region.
