Trevor Schultz, Volunteer of the Year.

Trevor Schultz’s distinguished military career spanning a quarter of a century is cause for celebration, but it’s his commitment to helping thousands of army cadets through their training that earned him the title of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s 2020 Australia Day Award for Volunteer of the Year.

Acting Mayor Mike Charlton said the Strathpine local’s commitment to training and supporting army cadets was unmatched.

“Trevor is a true volunteer in the greatest sense of the word, giving freely he time and enthusiasm for the betterment of our region and to better the lives of youths who sign up the Australian Army Cadets,” said Cr Charlton.

“He has demonstrated the Australia Army values of initiative, respect and teamwork through the work he does to empower youth across the region to reach their full potential.

“It’s truly my honour to name him this year’s Australia Day Volunteer of the Year.”

Trevor is a firm believer that young people should get involved in an organisation and start making a difference.

“People ask why I joined the army cadets? Well it’s always been my opinion that if you work in a community, you should give back to the community,” said Trevor.

“Young Australians are doing fantastic things; people knock the kids of today, but I couldn’t praise them high enough.”

Division 8 Councillor Mick Gillam said Trevor’s strong sense of mateship and service captured the ANZAC spirit.

“It’s an honour to pay tribute to special people in our community like Trevor,” said Cr Gillam.

“He’s always there beating a drum on ANZAC Day marching with the cadets and keeping them marching in time.

“I’ve known him for thirty years and always called him Sergeant Shultz because of his involvement and commitment to the cadets.

“He has worked with hundreds of local kids over the years and it’s fantastic we have opportunities like this to recognise and celebrate the achievements of people like Trevor.”
