Hole In One: Moreton Bay secures all-abilities golf championship

Moreton Bay Region has pulled off a major coup, securing the hosting rights for the 2020 Golf Australia State Inclusive Championship.

The national competition will be held at Redcliffe Golf Club in April 2020, bringing more than 200 competitors and spectators to our region for the two day tournament.

Parks, Recreation and Sport spokesperson Cr Koliana Winchester said she was thrilled to be making this exciting announcement during Disability Action Week (Sept 15-22).

“I know Redcliffe businesses will roll out the red carpet to welcome these visitors to our region and I encourage them to stay beyond the two days of competition to really enjoy the sights of our region,” she said.

“We estimate the event will inject at least $100,000 in tourism spending into our region over the weekend and will also showcase one of south east Queensland’s most picturesque golf courses to golfers from across the country.

“This financial year we’re investing a massive $34 million into sport and recreation projects across our region, to ensure we’ve got the courts and fields to host elite-level sport.

“Because not only do events like the 2020 Golf Australia State Inclusive Championship showcase our region, they also inject economic uplift with more people eating at local restaurants, staying in local hotels and filling up at local service stations as they explore Moreton Bay Region.”

Golf Australia national inclusion manager Christian Hamilton was delighted to bring the tournament to Moreton Bay.

“We’re really impressed with the wholehearted support council has given the event and delighted to play it in such a supportive region," Hamilton said.

"All abilities golf is a thriving part of what we do these days, ensuring as many people as possible have the chance to compete, or just play.

"And with the advent of a national calendar and the world rankings for golfers with a disability, it's becoming very competitive and we would expect some fantastic players from around Australia and the world to be at Redcliffe.

"We'd encourage all golf fans around the Moreton Bay area to come and watch ... you'll be amazed at the level of play.”

Lifestyle and Amenities spokesperson Cr Denise Sims said the tournament was a fantastic opportunity for council to support inclusivity in sport.

“Since finalising our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan last year, council has been working hard to ensure our services, programs and events are inclusive and accessible for all members of the community,” she said.

“Hosting a national all abilities sporting competition in the region is a fantastic opportunity and might inspire some local residents to give golf a go or to get out and get active.”
