Golden Valley Keperra Lions Roar into new building

The GVK Lions Club will be moving into fancy new digs next year, relocating from the old scout hall in Ferny Hills to a brand-new building in James Drysdale Reserve.
Not only will the Lions Club get a facilities upgrade, with construction expected to commence in the new year and be completed by 1 July 2021, they’ll also undertake the management of community use of the new building on behalf of Moreton Bay Regional Council.
GVK Lions Club Vice President Rodd Chignell welcomed the news and thanked the Council for the opportunity to be part of this exciting development.
“This new location will provide visibility for the Lions, where the community will be able to see Lions in action in serving the community,” Mr Rodd said.
Mayor Peter Flannery said it was a win-win for The Hills District: the Lions Club gets an upgrade and Council will have the option to use the land around the old scout hut as part of the proposed Harry Evans Park shared pathway alignment.
“To be honest old scout hall in Arana Hills is now at the point where it would almost be cheaper to rebuild it than repair it,” Mayor Flannery said.
“The hall sits in Harry Evans Park, where we’re currently asking for community feedback on a proposal to create a pathway through Harry Evans Park from Jane Street to Dinterra Avenue.
“This will effectively link up with the popular Kedron Brook Bikeway, which stretches to Mitchelton, Nundah, the city and beyond.
“This would be a major lifestyle investment for locals because we know more and more people are getting on their bike or walking.”
Cr Matt Constance (Div 10) said the Harry Evans Park pathway project would provide a crucial missing link for pedestrians and cyclists between the Hills District and Brisbane’s northern suburbs.
“This project will allow people to commute and exercise safely every day by getting off the busy roads like Patricks Road, while better connecting our local schools, shopping and activities centres,” he said.
“Consultation is open through to Monday 30 November, and I’m hoping we can get this underway next year to keep investing in our economy and our community infrastructure.
“We’re always looking for ways to enhance the lifestyle of Moreton Bay and active transport is becoming increasingly popular for all the right reasons: it’s better for the environment, cheaper, healthier and more social than driving a car.
“With more and more residents getting on their bike or walking in the wake of COVID-19, there’s been a big call from the community for this type of infrastructure, so I’m thrilled that this is happening here in The Hills District.”
