Inclusivity advocate wins Australia Day Award

Laying the foundations for a more inclusive region that enables independence for people living with a disability has won Elisha Wright of Murrumba Downs the Moreton Bay Regional Council 2019 Australia Day Award for Citizen of the Year.
Mayor Allan Sutherland said Elisha was highly deserving of the recognition for her contribution towards a more accessible Moreton Bay.
“Elisha’s insight and ideas have proved to be invaluable in the development of our region’s first Disability Access and Inclusion Plan,” Cr Sutherland said.
“She has helped shape the guidelines for design and accessibility of parks, pathways, shopping centres, commercial businesses and other public spaces.
“I’m thrilled that we are able to recognise Elisha’s contributions with this year’s Australia Day Award for Citizen of the Year.”
Councillor for Division 7 and Spokesperson for Lifestyle and Amenity, Denise Sims, said Elisha was a powerful and effective advocate for inclusivity.
“Not only will Elisha’s achievements create a legacy which will improve the lives of thousands of residents and their loved ones in years to come, Elisha has helped bring the community on a journey to better understand when we are inclusive, society benefits,” Cr Sims said.
Elisha was presented with her award at a special function for the region’s Australia Day Award recipients on Thursday, 17 January at Clear Mountain Lodge.
Other Australia Day Award recipients for Moreton Bay
Volunteer of the Year - Des Dewar, whose work with Deception Bay Meals on Wheels has helped nourish people in need for more than 25 years.
Sports Award - Mitchell James, an accomplished tennis player who has held the #2 ranking in Australian Singles for six years and currently holds the #1 ranking for Australian Doubles.
Youth Sports Award - Fraser Vaughan, a young BMX racer who has secured some incredible results in recent years both nationally and internationally.
Arts and Culture Award - Carmel Bond, who has made a valuable contribution to Dayboro and the greater region by preserving the town’s rich history.
Environment Award - Husband and wife team, Richard and Carole Green, who have made significant contributions to the region’s environment including the restoration and preservation of John Oxley Reserve.
