The life and times of Scarface Claw

Lynley Dodd, Scarface Claw (detail, page 28) from Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy (1983), gouache and pen. Collection of the artist, reproduced courtesy of the artist and Penguin Random House New Zealand.

Fierce on the outside and soft underneath, Scarface Claw takes centre stage in his very own exhibition. With over 40 original watercolour illustrations by author and illustrator - Dame Lynley Dodd, this exhibition reveals the development of Scarface Claw from his first appearance in Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy (1983) to his latest, and perhaps greatest, with an entire book devoted to his story, Scarface Claw, Hold Tight! (2017). Take the opportunity to glimpse the creative process behind the characters and the stories that are beloved by adults and children.

Visitors are invited to capture and share their visit to the exhibition by taking a photo in a specially created Scarface Claw photo booth. Stay longer and cosy up in our reading nook where a range of Lynley Dodd books will be available to read. Youngsters can also attend a weekly theatrical reading of Lynley Dodd books with storyteller Wendy Whiskers. The Gallery Playtime session will be followed by complementary art and craft activities.

Exhibition curated by Penelope Jackson.
