For five years photographer Jennifere Thompson has travelled around the world making photographic memories of primate. ICU TOO is an ongoing portrait series of primates that live in natural environments, as well as in simulated natural habitats better known as zoos. Thompson often photographs primates in wildlife rescue centres and primate sanctuaries.
Through her own unique style of black and white images she creates emotional awareness of a primate species. Through artistic choice she portrays a scene devoid of background. She sculpts shadows using negative space. Her purpose is to evoke curiosity and for the human to step up close and look deeply into the face of a primate. The intention is for the human to make an emotional connection, a parallel between themselves and the sentient non-human. This is Jennifere’s personal invitation for a human to think about the status of a primate species on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Animals.
“Some are plenty, some extinct, safety in numbers saved by the brink.”
