Kids workshop: First Nations storytelling

For generations, Indigenous people have preserved their history, knowledge, and traditions through the power of stories. Join us during these school holidays to discover and learn about First Nations culture through the ancient art of storytelling.
Caboolture Regional Art Gallery presents two workshops where kids will sit in a yarning circle with the artists to share and yarn about Kabi Kabi and Jinibara stories and connections.

Session 1: 9 January 2024

Uncle Noel Blair and Zartisha Davis

Uncle Noel Blair is a Jinibara Elder born in Cherbourg Aboriginal Community, he is the Elder in residence at Munimba-ja Aboriginal owned gallery, the only Aboriginal owned and operated gallery on the Sunshine Coast. Uncle Noel Has always felt strong when learning about his culture. He learnt a lot of culture in Cherbourg over the years. As a young man he used to get visits from black fellas from all over and he regularly recollects what they taught him.

Uncle Noel will be joined by Kabi Kabi Artist Zartisha Davis. Zartisha a Kabi Kabi woman descending from the Mooloolaba Chilly family, the Mooloolah and Meridan Plains people. Her songlines also include belonging to the Cobble Cobble people of the Burrungam Nation also known as the caretakers of Bonyi (Bunya Mountains) and on her fathers side belonging to the Butchulla (Badtjala) people from K’Gari (Fraser Island). She also has South Sea Islander descent from New Caledonia. Zartisha is passionate about her culture, dance and artwork and she will often depict stories from her family, tribe and country all throughout her artwork.

Aunty Sharyn Malone

Aunty Sharyn Malone is a proud Kabi Kabi, Koa-Gwa woman and artist. She is a direct bloodline descendant from Kuku Yalangi and Wakka Wakka tribes. Aunty Sharyn was born and raised in Cherbourg on Wakka Wakka Country. She is a qualified counsellor, family therapist, art therapist, and storyteller. Aunty Sharyn will be sharing stories and connections from Kabi Kabi Country and beyond.
